What is the dashboard?
The default Managing News homepage is a dashboard. It contains a set of blocks that you can modify, rearrange, add to or delete from in order to build a single page or set of pages that display an overview of the stories across the site in various ways.
Adding and removing blocks in the dashboard
Begin by clicking the Home tab and click the Customize dashboard button in the lower right-hand corner:
You will see a popup with a list of several blocks which you can add to the dashboard:
The Add custom box box allows you to add a block with your own content in it. The feed, channel and search boxes all provide common settings like display type (list, map or graph) and number of items to display.
To add the box to the dashboard, drag one of the items in the overlay over to the page until you see a dashed line.
Drop the box in the position where you'd like it, and fill in the configuration form that displays.
You can also move or remove boxes by hovering over them to display a gray handle. Click the (X) to remove the block, or drag the handle to a new location to move it:
When you are done, click the Save changes button.
Enabling additional blocks
The collection of blocks you see in the overlay is a subset of all of the blocks available on your Managing News site. To enable additional blocks, go to Administer > Site Configuration > Dashboard Settings (admin/settings/dashboard). Here you will see a three-sectioned configuration form:
The column on the left (1) represents collections of blocks. You can click these items to display the associated blocks in the middle column (2). Blocks that are checked will display as options in the Dashboard overlay. Check the box next to blocks you want to add, and click Save configuration (3). Note that many of these blocks rely on a particular context in order to display properly, so they may not look quite right on the dashboard.
Adding and removing dashboard pages
You can have up to 5 customized dashboard pages. To add an additional dashboard page, click on the Home tab and click the Add custom item in the sub-menu:
This will open up a configuration form where you can add titles for additional dashboards:
Once added, a new tab will appear in the sub-navigation with that title:
To remove a dashboard, just click the Add custom link again and clear the title of the dashboard you wish to remove.
